Capital intensity is the ratio of equity or capital required to generate one U.S. dollar of revenue. In 2017, life insurance companies had a capital intensity of 95 percent in the United States, whereas health insurance companies had a capital intensity ratio of ten percent according to McKinsey. This means that life insurance companies needed almost ten times more capital to generate revenue than health insurance companies did.
