Deaths caused by laryngeal cancer in Spain 2005-2017 This statistic shows the annual number of deaths as a result of laryngeal cancer in Spain from 2005 to 2017. During the period of time observed, the registered number of deaths caused by this condition experienced a downtrend, ranging from approximately 1.6 thousand deaths in 2005 down to 1.36 thousand cases in 2017.
Cancer of the larynx causes alterations in phonation, swallowing and breathing, depending on the location of the tumor and its dimensions. Among the risk factors for this type of cancer are the history of smoking and alcoholism, the inhalation of chemical substances and chronic irritation due to gastric reflux. The majority of cases are directly related to smoking. Laryngeal cancer is more common in men, probably because the main risk factors, alcohol and tobacco consumption, are more frequent in men than in women.
