Community of Madrid: deaths from sepsis Spain

The number of deaths due to sepsis in Madrid has been increasing in the last few years. In 2021, the number of fatalities resulting from sepsis in the community of Madrid reached 290 cases, up from 274 deaths reported a year prior. The figure peaked at 558 annual deaths due to the disease in 2015 and attained its lowest value in 2019. As of 2021, Spain reported a total of 2,850 deaths from septicemia nationwide.

* Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that emerges when the body's response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. Sepsis is caused by an inflammatory immune response triggered by an infection. Most commonly, the infection is bacterial, but it may also be fungal, viral, or protozoan. Common locations for the primary infection include the lungs, brain, urinary tract, skin, and abdominal organs. Risk factors include very young age, older age, a weakened immune system from conditions such as cancer or diabetes, major trauma, or burns.
