The sample size for urban dwellers was 29,557, rural residents 19,023; male sample size was 23,577 while female sample size was 25,003. The data was collected on one weekday and one weekend day, where subjects were asked to record activities in 15-minute intervals.

Housework refers to unpaid family activities for oneself and one's family, including food and drink preparation, cooking meals, dishwashing, cleaning, laundry, arranging/taking care of plants inside and outside the house, maintaining the garden/yard; taking care of pets; small-scale maintenance, renovation, production, installation, and repair of personal and household items, maintenance and minor repair of vehicles (referring to daily use); planning for the family groceries, invest or wealth management, gatherings, travel, etc.

Accompanying and caring for family includes caring for children, escorting and counseling for children's education and accompanying adult family members.
Caring for children refers to the care activities for family members under the age of 18. It includes dressing, bathing, feeding, medical care, etc. for children; talking with children, watching TV/online videos with children, providing other daily support for children; watching children playing indoors and outdoors, accompanying children to playgrounds, hospitals, etc.
Escorting and counseling for children's education refers to counseling, companionship and supervision activities for family members under the age of 18, including picking up and dropping off at school, interest classes, extracurricular remedial classes, etc.; reading, coaching, doing homework and other activities with children.
Accompanying adult family members refers to the care activities of adult family members, including helping in the daily life of adult family members, personal hygiene care, medical care (feeding medicine, body massage, physical therapy, etc.), accompanying to a hospital, outings, etc., chatting with adult family members.

Purchase of goods or services refers to buying goods or receive services online or at a physical store, including purchase of food, clothing, daily necessities, take-away, medical supplies and other consumer goods, household appliances, furniture, automobiles and other durable goods; contacting appliance repair personnel to repair electrical appliances, going to car repair points to repair cars; going to financial institutions (banks), law/advertising media/wedding companies, house leasing and other specialized agencies to handle related business activities. This does not include visiting beauty salons for beauty and hairdressing activities.
Seeing a doctor and/or receiving a medical treatment refers to services in medical institutions or through the internet by seeing a doctor, receiving a treatment, physical examination, counseling, physical therapy massage, optometry and other activities. This does not include accompanying others to see a doctor and bringing pets to a vet.

Public welfare activities refer to providing to people outside the family for no compensation. It includes community services such as voluntary labor, volunteer service organized by units, communities or charities, and citizens fulfilling their obligations to participate in election voting activities.
