Number of motorcycles in use in Indonesia 2017-2022

In 2022, the number of motorcycles in circulation in Indonesia reached 125 million. The country has one of the largest motorcycle fleets in the world. Motorcycles are the most popular vehicle type in Indonesia, far ahead of passenger cars. Gojek, an Indonesian decacorn, has taken advantage of this situation by using motorbikes for commuter services.

Despite a drop in revenue due to the pandemic in 2020, motorcycle market revenues show no signs of weakening in the coming years. Motorcycles remain the most efficient and cheapest mode of transport in many parts of the country. Among users, there is a strong preference for scooters and vehicles with a cylinder capacity of less than 125cc.

Leading motorcycle brands in Indonesia

In Indonesia, Japanese manufacturers dominate the motorcycle market, with factories based in the country, producing motorcycles for domestic demand as well as for exports. Honda leads the sector with a market share of 73.8 percent. The company operates through a joint venture in partnership with Astra International, which exclusively covers the production and distribution of the brand's vehicles. The manufacturer is tailored to the needs of the Indonesian market, with models such as the Honda Beat and Vario.
