U.S. workers covered by self-funded health insurance plans 1999-2022
According to the data, among all firms the percentage of employees covered by self-funded plans had increased from 44 percent in 1999 to a record high of 67 percent in 2020 before decreasing slightly to 65 percent in 2022. Self-funded plans are those in which companies choose to pay for some or all of the health services of their workers directly rather than purchasing health insurance for them.
