Germany's energy industry released an estimated 256 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2022, making it the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. Emissions from Germany's energy supply sector rose 4.4 percent in 2022 due to the increased use of coal in the wake of the energy crisis brought on by the Russia-Ukraine war. Nevertheless, the country's overall GHG emissions fell by two percent that year, as high prices caused industry emissions to fall 10 percent from 2021 levels.
