In 2018, Euro 4 cars made up about a third of the number of cars in the Italian city of Cagliari. The Euro 5 and Euro 6 classes accounted for 17 and 12 percent of the number of cars in the city, respectively. One in ten cars belonged to the unregulated Euro 0 category, which was the most polluting class of vehicles.

*The European emission standards define emission limits for vehicles. The most stringent one, the Euro 6 standards, were introduced for light vehicles in September 2014. Since 2015, all newly introduced models in Europe had to comply with them. By contrast, Euro 0 vehicles are not subject to any emission requirements and are the most polluting category.
