Shale gas production in the U.S. by basin 2021

The Marcellus shale play, located in the Appalachian basin across parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia is the greatest shale gas producing region in the United States. In 2021, the play produced 9.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Marcellus also houses the greatest proved shale gas reserves, nearly triple the amount of natural gas found in the Permian Basin.
