Melting glaciers and sea ice

Statistics report about melting glaciers and sea ice worldwide

Melting glaciers and sea ice

This report presents graphs and tables about global glaciers and sea ice. Glaciers occur on land and are made up of falling snow that has been compacted into ice over thousands of years. The ice movement from land to the sea causes the global sea-level rise. As the water freezes and the ice cover expands in the autumn and winter, the amount of sea ice changes dramatically, followed by a period of melting and retreat in the spring and summer.

This report is part of a series of reports on the impacts of climate change.
