Decarbonization has become one of the most pressing issues facing governments and industries today. The impact of climate change on the environment, people, and the economy is already evident across the world. As more and more studies about its acceleration are released, the pressure on those in power to counteract it increases. Over 100 countries, including current largest emitters China, the United States, and the European Union, have announced plans for reaching net-zero emissions sometime mid-century. However, no magic cure has appeared to help filter out the over 35 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitted each year, and the energy and transportation sectors in particular continue to rely on carbon-intensive fossil fuels.
