Deliveroo was founded in London in 2013 by Will Shu and Greg Orlowski and has since become one of the leading online food delivery companies worldwide. Expanding operations beyond its home market in the UK, Deliveroo currently operates in ten different countries, half of which are located outside of Europe, including Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Singapore and Hong Kong. Like many other food delivery companies, Deliveroo’s popularity was bolstered by the coronavirus pandemic, as lockdowns and quarantine regulations forced people to resort to digital channels to do their shopping. Even after the pandemic ended, Deliveroo's growth appeared poised to remain on an upward path.

How successful is Deliveroo?

As the coronavirus pandemic hit, Deliveroo's revenues surpassed the one-billion-pound mark, reflecting an almost threefold increase compared to only two years prior. Since then, the company's revenues kept increasing, approaching the two-billion-pounds threshold in 2022. Similarly, other financial figures mirrored this impressive growth, as gross profit increased from a mere 91 million British pounds in 2018 to more than 640 million pounds in 2022. Deliveroo most recently launched in Gulf countries, and Qatar was the latest market the company entered in October 2022. Nevertheless, the company remains most successful in the UK and Ireland, where its gross transaction value reached 3.8 billion British pounds in 2022, compared to less than three billion pounds for the rest of its international markets.

How popular is Deliveroo?

Deliveroo’s international presence has resulted in the online food delivery company servicing millions of consumers around the world. In 2022, the company received its highest-ever number of orders at 299 million, many of which were from returning customers. Deliveroo's average monthly order frequency, which is the average number of orders placed by active consumers in a month, was around 3.4 orders per month in 2022. Both the number of orders worldwide and the average monthly order frequency increased year-over-year for the company since 2018, reflecting success during the pandemic and beyond. Despite widespread use throughout the UK, Deliveroo did not get the top spot as the most downloaded food delivery app in 2022, ranking third after Tesco Groceries and Uber Eats. However, it managed to get the second spot in France, where consumers downloaded the Deliveroo app over 1.5 million times in 2022.
