Established by two former Expedia executives, the company focuses especially on mobile bookings and fintech products, such as a price freeze option for hotel rates and airfares. Over the last 15 years, the total funding raised by Hopper amounted to more than 700 million U.S. dollars. Meanwhile, the firm’s latest valuation reached five billion U.S. dollars, making Hopper one of the highest-valued travel and tourism unicorn startups worldwide in 2022.

How popular is the Hopper app?

Since the launch of the Hopper app in 2015, mobile bookings of travel products and travel-related fintech services have represented the business core of the Canadian-based company. While global visits to hopper.com surpassed four million in March 2023, flight, hotel, short-term accommodation, and rental car bookings were exclusively available on the mobile app at that time. After quickly gaining momentum in the last few years, Hopper’s mobile application ranked among the most downloaded online travel agency (OTA) apps worldwide in 2022. When looking at the downloads of leading OTA apps in the United States that year, it becomes clear that U.S. consumers played a fundamental role for Hopper, accounting for nearly two-thirds of its global app downloads.

Who are Hopper’s main competitors?

Figures on the market share of leading travel apps in the United States, as estimated by Statista Digital Market Insights, revealed a very competitive landscape, particularly among OTA apps. In 2022, Hopper held the same market share as Airbnb and Expedia and ranked just behind Vrbo and Booking.com by a thin margin. On the other hand, Hopper did not rank among the leading travel apps in Europe based on the market share in 2022, whereas competitors Booking.com and Airbnb generated approximately 14 percent and seven percent of travel app revenue in that region, respectively.
