The vast majority of grocery shopping still takes place in traditional brick-and mortar stores. But according to industry experts, this pattern may change during the next decades. More and more tech-savvy retailers now offer grocery delivery options for their customers in the United States. Like the milk man used to do in the past, retailers bring food items right to your doorstep. As of 2017, the e-retail food and beverage segment had a year-on-year revenue growth of about 18 percent, a promising figure for the future of e-grocery retail. In total, U.S. online grocery sales amounted to about 17.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 and are expected to rise to nearly 30 billion U.S. dollars by 2021.

Among all the online food and beverage retailers, the e-commerce giant Amazon had the highest market share in 2016, followed by Walmart and Kroger. In recent years, Amazon has introduced Amazon Fresh and Prime Pantry, two online grocery shopping services. Amazon’s food and beverage sales are projected to rise from approximately 14.5 billion dollars in 2018 to over 23 billion dollars in 2021.

In this age of smart phones and near constant internet access, many grocery retailers are integrating a range of new and exciting services into online grocery shopping using mobile apps, click-and-collect, and home delivery. About 54 percent of grocery retailers offer a mobile shopping app for their customers. These apps might give access to exclusive e-coupons, online ordering, or loyalty cards; just a few of the services that customers find most advantageous.

One of the biggest obstacles to the widespread adoption of online grocery shopping is that less than a third of food stores in the United States offer home delivery or store pickup services as of August 2017. However, about a quarter of those stores without home delivery or store pickup services plan to offer them within the next year.
