Originally named Auto Shack, AutoZone opened its first store in Arkansas in 1979, selling light truck and auto parts. Now, the company operates over 5,000 stores in the United States, Mexico and Brazil. In addition to on-site locations, AutoZone distributes auto parts online through various websites. Additionally, many U.S. stores also offer a Pickup In-Store option, allowing customers to place orders for accessories and components on the website and have it delivered to an AutoZone store near them.

The Memphis-headquartered company is the largest automotive aftermarket retailer and installer in the United States with nearly 8.9 billion U.S. dollars of retail sales. In the United States, its prime competitors include O'Reilly, Advance Auto Parts and Pep Boys - Manny, Moe and Jack.

In a Spring 2017 survey, some 65.3 million people stated a member of their household had shopped for car products at AutoZone within a period of 12 months prior to the survey.
