E-commerce in Russia - statistics & facts
Key market players
In terms of revenue, the Russian e-commerce market is dominated by large general marketplaces. Among specialized stores, e-grocery platforms and online pharmacies occupy the leading positions. The leading Russian online retailer is Wildberries, a marketplace offering various product categories founded in 2004. Wildberries sold goods worth over 2.1 trillion Russian rubles within Russia in 2023, while its main competitor, Ozon, recorded around 1.4 trillion Russian rubles in domestic sales. Furthermore, Russia has several digital ecosystems, or packages of different online services offered by the same company, such as Yandex, VK, and Sber. The total revenue of the major 100 e-commerce companies in the country grew by nearly 44 percent from 2022 to 2023, which shows the continuously increasing importance of online commerce in Russian retail.E-commerce logistics
Russia's largest online marketplaces, Wildberries and Ozon, have their own delivery services and pickup points. Together, they account for 80 percent of the total logistics market for online shopping orders in 2023. At the same time, the market share of logistics companies stood at only six percent, having steadily decreased in recent years. When it comes to shipping of goods from foreign online stores, most consumers used Russian Post as a delivery provider. Delivery times for international shipping were usually longer, as more than a quarter of cross-border e-shoppers reported having to wait for over 28 days to receive their orders. The Russian e-commerce market continues to grow, given the rise of online marketplaces, new retail technologies, and the dominance of several key players. As a result, the market size is expected to increase to over 20 trillion Russian rubles by 2028. However, as online stores have already established themselves as a major sales channel, the revenue is forecast to grow at a decreasing rate.
