Internet usage in Colombia - Statistics & Facts

Three words summarize the use of internet in Colombia: engaging, intense, and increasing. The expansion is ongoing. In 2008, only one out of four Colombians were online. Ten years later, roughly two out of three inhabitants of the South American country were surfing the web. Recently, the number of local Facebook users reached 32 million, over 14 percent more than two years before. Colombia expects to register 290 million online transactions by 2022 — over three times more than the number of purchases via internet recorded in 2017.

The growth is backed by an intense usage of online platforms. In 2018, practically seven out of ten internet users in Colombia accessed it on a daily basis. Surpassing Argentina, China, and the United States, the country has one of the highest averages for time spent on social media: more than three hours and a half per day as of June 2018. The development of e-commerce is also expected to receive a boost from specific preferences of the Colombian consumer. It is predicted that online retail sales of personal accessories will increase no less than 15 times from 2018 to 2023, for instance. Consumption is also concentrated on special dates, as the number of online transactions in Colombia during 2018 Black Friday was 630 percent bigger than on an ordinary day in the same year.

Both the increase and intensity of internet usage intertwine with the way Colombians engage in online activities. Whereas laptop and desktop computers concentrated over 73 percent of the web traffic throughout 2019, internet users in Latin America as a whole have been spending more and more time online through mobile devices. Practicality is also imperative when people in Colombia decide how to experience internet itself: solutions like WhatsApp, Chrome, and Google are, by far, the favorites when it comes to instant messaging, browsing, and web search respectively.

Still, internet usage in Colombia has its challenges. Internet inclusivity is hindered by a lack of the infrastructure necessary for accessing the web. Colombia also ranks poorly in terms of civility in online environments, as users reported problems of tone and tenor in interactions via internet within the country. Furthermore, with higher internet penetration in the biggest cities such as Bogotá and Medellín, there is more room for improvement in the rest of the South American country.
