Banco Santander - statistics & facts

Initially created to facilitate trade between the Port of Santander in Northern Spain and Latin America, Banco Santander was incorporated in 1857. During more than 160 years of operation, the Spanish bank has continually grown, both through acquisitions and expansion of services and operations. Banco Santander is now not only the largest bank in Spain but also the fourth largest bank in Europe in terms of total assets. The bank employs around 206,000 individuals and has more than 9,000 branches operating worldwide.

How many customers does Santander have?

In 2022, the Spanish banking giant had more customers  than any other European bank. Its customer number grew by almost 60 million between 2012 and 2022, reaching a total of 160 million customers worldwide in 2022. Though the bank is headquartered in Europe, more specifically in Boadilla del Monte in Spain, its largest customer base is in Brazil, followed by the United Kingdom. The number of Brazilian customers was over 60 million in 2022, accounting for more than one third of their total customer base.

Santander’s environmental commitment

In 2019, Santander joined a growing number of the world's largest banks in making a financial commitment to sustainable financing and investments to help projects, technologies, and clean energies in deliver on the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Banco Santander's goal is to facilitate and mobilize 120 billion euros of green finance between 2019 and 2025. Between 2019 and 2030, the bank aims for the level of green finance to reach 220 billion euros. In 2022, Banco Santander reached more than 94 billion U.S. dollars in green finance, with the majority in mergers and acquisitions as well as project finance advisory and lending.
