Hotel industry in Thailand - statistics & facts

Thailand is a popular destination for tourists, attracting millions of visitors from around the globe. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand had seen a rising influx of visitor arrivals since 2015. The hotel industry has thus benefitted from the increase in visitors. Altogether, Thailand had almost 800 thousand hotel rooms ranging from budget to luxury hotels; the southern region accommodated the highest number of hotel rooms in 2022. Foreign visitors are key contributors to the hotel industry in Thailand. In the past years, the average proportion of international tourists staying in travel accommodations in Thailand amounted to over 30 percent, with a significant decrease during COVID-19 pandemic.

The potential of the hotel industry

The low cost of living in Thailand, especially when compared to some of the other countries in the Asia Pacific, gives the Thai tourism and hospitality industry an advantage in terms of value for money for foreign visitors. As the demand from both international and domestic tourists grows, so does the capacity of the Thai hotel businesses. The hotel industry in Thailand is always improving its capacity to meet the demands of its visitors. Tourists can find luxury five-star hotels to low-key hostels and guesthouses across the country. In terms of the occupancy rate in Thailand, hotels in the northern region proved to be in high demand among other regions as its occupancy rate accounted for around 19 percent amid the pandemic.

The outlook of hotel industry post COVID-19 pandemic

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic had drastically impacted the tourism industry in Thailand, due to the travel restrictions imposed. However, since most of the traveling regulations and rules against the pandemic were lifted, the tourism industry in Thailand started to see some improvements in terms of tourism revenue in the first half of 2023. Though, the confidence index for hotel operators in the country still scored relatively low. This implied that hotel operators had concerns on the prospects of the tourism and hospitality industry in the future.
