Travel and tourism in Croatia - statistics & facts

Tourism in Croatia boomed throughout the decade until 2020, continuing to be a major contributor to the local economy. The increasing number of international visitors prompted heavier investment in hotels and accommodation during this time in order to meet the growing demand. Accommodation capacity almost doubled between 2012 and 2019, with well over 100,000 hotels, holiday and other short stay establishments available in Croatia. Although the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) in 2020 disrupted growth in tourist numbers, the industry is expected to recover. It is predicted that the tourism sector will contribute over 18.1 billion U.S. dollars to the Croatian economy in 2025.

Destination Croatia

Croatia is a leading summer vacation destination in Southeast Europe. It attracts tourists from all over Europe, however, it remains most popular with travelers from Germany and Austria. Nearby Italy and Slovenia are also important markets. Many people travel to Croatia to stay in its numerous coastal towns which line the Adriatic Sea, also making it a key destination for cruise travelers. Dubrovnik is one of the most visited towns in Croatia. Thanks to its popularity as a cruise port of call, as well as a filming location for the TV series Game of Thrones, the old town of Dubrovnik has had to deal with issues of overcrowding, including attempts to control the number of tourists entering at peak times.

Impact of COVID-19

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic broke out across Europe, Croatia, along with other European countries, closed its borders to international tourists. Overnight tourist arrivals fell by 99 percent in April 2020 compared to the same period a year earlier. Croatia was able to re-open to tourists in the summer, with arrivals reaching 2.5 million in the month of August, before cases began to rise again in the autumn. According to Statista forecasts, international tourism is expected to recover and return to pre-pandemic levels by 2022.
