In 2021, the production value of German machine tools amounted to almost nine billion euros, not including parts and accessories. Germany produces a wide range of machine tools and their parts and accessories, with metal cutting tools holding the highest production value at some 6.6 billion euros in 2021. That year, some 2.4 billion euros worth of metal forming tools were manufactured in Germany.

In 2021, the European Union (EU) was the leading importer of machine tools into Germany. That year, the EU was responsible for over 40 percent of all machine tool exports into the country. Similarly, Germany was exporting nearly 42 percent of its machine tool production into the EU in 2021. In terms of countries, however, Switzerland was the largest import market for machine tools for Germany, while China was the largest export market. In 2021, German imports of machine tools from Switzerland amounted to around 722 million euros, while exports to China were worth around 1.6 billion euros. The largest machine tool producer in the world is Mazak, a Japan-based tool manufacturer, with revenue amounting to 5.28 billion in 2019. Mazak is followed by the German machine tool producers Trumpf and DMG Mori. In the 2020/2021 fiscal year, Trumpf recorded a revenue of 3.5 billion euros while DMG Mori generated nearly 2.1 billion euros in revenue in 2021.
