Sporting goods industry in Spain - statistics & facts

Sports equipment is one of the retail industries that has grown in recent years in Spain. The promotion of healthier habits and the adaptation of areas for exercising in big cities have encouraged more people to participate. These are some of the reasons for the boom of this industry within fashion and retail. In fact, in 2021, sporting goods revenue in Spain amounted to around 8.6 billion euros, the highest figure in the last five years.

Adidas and Decathlon, leaders in Spanish sports retail

Sporting goods retail may be flourishing, but the leading companies in the industry are from abroad. In Spain, two companies stand out: the French company Decathlon and the German company Adidas. Adidas is the leading brand of sports fashion and the sales of the Adidas subsidiary in Spain exceeded 350 million euros in 2020. Meanwhile, in 2020, Decathlon's Spanish subsidiary had a sales value of more than 1.5 billion euros, even though the number of sporting goods stores is decreasing. But the company weathered the storm thanks to its online channel, which in recent years was the leading sporting goods online shop in Spain, followed by Adidas.

Running, a trend in Spain

The sporting goods demand in Spain is driven by running and cycling. In fact, in 2021, running made up nearly nine percent of the sales volume of sporting goods in Spain. 12.6 percent of the Spanish population went for a run that same year. Spaniards ran an average of 7.8 kilometers and 44 minutes in 2020. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic increased concerns for health in 2020, leading to more sports activities pursued among all age groups, especially younger ones.
