Energy sector in Thailand - statistics & facts

Thailand’s energy sector significantly contributes to the country’s economy thanks to its natural resources for primary energy and high production capacity for final energy. Energy production facilities are located throughout the country, especially for natural gas, crude oil, and coal. These resources are necessary for generating power for the country, providing Thai households with electricity and gas. In addition, Thailand’s GDP from electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning had been gradually increasing until 2020.

Key energy resources in Thailand

  Natural gas accounts for the highest share of energy production in Thailand, among other types of energy, such as oil, lignite, coal, hydropower, and condensate. In total, there are 13 production facilities for natural gas across the country, with the main facility located in the Gulf of Thailand. In 2022, natural gas accounted for the country’s highest  total power generation capacity, followed by coal and lignite. Apart from high production capacity, Thailand also imports and exports a high volume of energy. From January to November 2022,  the value of energy imports and exports in Thailand amounted to almost 2.3 trillion Thai baht. Although imports account for most of Thailand’s international energy trade, energy exports also play a significant role, especially for oil.

Energy consumption and outlook

In 2022, around two million barrels worth of commercial primary energy oil equivalent were consumed in the country, with most of the consumed energy in Thailand generated from petroleum products and natural gas. As the use of energy has increased each year, the Thai government has promoted the use of more environmentally friendly alternatives in the form of renewable energy sources. For sustainability purposes, the development of renewable energy production technologies has been introduced and executed. The government introduced measures such as promoting investments in renewable energy and reducing production capital. The objective of such measures was to reduce the use of fossil fuels as much as possible and to create public access to renewable energy. So far, these measures have contributed to the year-on-year increase in the use of renewable energy in Thailand.
