Wind energy in Denmark - statistics & facts

Wind energy is one of the most widely used renewable energy sources in Denmark. In 2022, the wind energy production surpassed 19 terawatt-hours. This increased production results from continuous improvement in wind power technology, which has led to a significant reduction in the cost of this technology. Today, more than half of Denmark's electricity production comes from wind farms. The number of active wind turbines is increasing yearly and reached a value of 6,296 installations at the beginning of 2022, achieving a production capacity of approximately seven gigawatts.

To ensure that Denmark can stop relying on fossil fuels by 2050, a highly developed level of wind power production plays a vital role in the transition of the energy system. The utilization of wind power in Denmark has been growing every year and peaked at around 68 petajoules in 2022. Wind power consumption accounts for approximately 53.6 percent of Denmark's total electricity consumption. The well-developed wind power industry is highly desirable and pulls many stakeholders.

Vestas Wind Systems is Denmark's leading wind turbine manufacturer and a key player in the Danish wind power industry. In 2022, Vestas held total assets worth over 20 billion euros, and its revenue was approximately 14.5 billion euros. The company, based in Aarhus, is a major manufacturer, seller, installer, and service provider of wind turbines worldwide, with turbines installed in more than 70 countries. In 2021, Vestas accounted for over 15 percent of the wind turbine commissioned capacity worldwide, the highest of any manufacturer.
