Parcel market in Italy - statistics & facts

E-commerce has grown steadily in recent years and even more during the coronavirus pandemic, significantly impacting the courier industry. The impact of online shopping in the courier industry is reflected in the number of parcels deliveries made in 2020, which was more than two times higher than nine years ago. Thus, a record number of 830 million parcels were shipped by Italian couriers in 2020.

The growing courier industry

As a result of the boom in parcel deliveries, businesses in the courier sector exceeded five billion euros in revenue in 2020. With the development of logistics services in Italy and the growing demand for freight transport, businesses in this sector increased by more than 20 percent compared to the previous year and by over 62 percent compared to five years ago.

BRT leads the top parcel service companies

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 was a successful year for courier companies. Businesses have grown and the largest companies in the industry have made higher revenue streams than in the year before. The Italian subsidiary of DPD Group, BRT is the leading courier company, with almost a quarter of the market. Amazon Logistics saw a dramatic increase in the number of parcels delivered and continues to gain ground in the Italian parcel market
