Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands and is the most populated city in the country with over 905,000 residents. Over recent years, the population has also increased, in part due to the positive net migration. Together with the growing population, the number of companies has also grown significantly, as has the number of hotel guests. Amsterdam also houses one of the biggest airports in the world, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the second largest in the European Union. Before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the passenger traffic at the airport had been increasing annually, before shrinking by two-thirds, as a consequence of the pandemic.

Living in Amsterdam

For a multitude of reasons, Amsterdam is a popular city to live and work in. This can be seen in the rising population and population density. Furthermore, Amsterdam is becoming increasingly attractive to foreigners, as there are now more first-generation immigrants living in Amsterdam than ever before. The average annual income has also been increasing annually. However, not everyone may feel very safe in Amsterdam, as crime is prevalent in the city, even though many types of crime such as thefts and burglaries, public violence, and destruction of cars have been falling. Amsterdam also hosts the Pride Amsterdam event, which hosts hundreds of thousands of people celebrating sexual diversity.

Tourism in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a hotspot for tourism in the Netherlands with the number of nights spent in hotels increasing annually. At the same time, the number of hotels and jobs in the tourism industry have also been growing to accommodate for this demand. When comparing the occupancy rate of hotels between hotels in Amsterdam and the whole of the Netherlands, the hotels in Amsterdam have had a higher occupancy rate over the past two years. Of all the hotel guests in Amsterdam, most guests were domestic, and the largest foreign group were British tourists. Although hotels are still the most sought after accommodation type, Airbnb now ranks second in terms of guests and overnight stays spent.
