Final day triumph in the 2021/22 season

Manchester City Football Club are the current champions of the English Premier League, after an amazing comeback win against Aston Villa on the final day of the season to pip Liverpool FC to the title. Trailing by two goals late into the game, City managed to score three goals within just five minutes, from minutes 76 to 81 to turn the game on its head. Two of these goals came from German national team player Ilkay Gündogan, who brought his goal tally for Manchester City up to 36 goals. This was the sixth time Manchester City won the Premier League and it cemented their extremely successful recent run, having claimed the league title four out of the last five seasons and placing second in the other season.

City claiming success on and off the pitch

It is not only the titles that reflect that Manchester City FC is one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world - City also generated the highest revenue among soccer clubs in Europe during the 2020/21 season. The revenue of Manchester City has seen a steady increase over the last decade and reached a new high of 645 million euros in the last recorded season. The majority of this revenue is evenly split between broadcasting deals and commercial income, with roughly another ten percent coming from matchday income. Revenues as a whole, and matchday income in particular, as well as enterprise value took a noticeable hit in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent COVID-19 restrictions in the Premier League.

Fan favorites at the Etihad

Manchester City has maintained a continuous spot in the Premier League since 2002 and was founded all the way back in 1880. City's home games are played at the Etihad Stadium, the fifth largest stadium in the Premier League, with a capacity of 55,017. The Etihad welcomed an average attendance of 52.7 thousand fans per game in the 2021/22 season. The now-retired Sergio Agüero is the club's all-time leading goal scorer by some distance, scoring 184 goals for the club between 2011 and 2021. He scored arguably the most important goal in the club's history on the final day of the 2011/12 season, securing City's first ever Premier League title with a last minute winner against QPR. Agüero also ranks second in all-time appearances for Manchester City, having played 275 matches, trailing David Silva with 309 appearances, in which Silva scored 60 times. During the latest 2021/22 season, Kevin De Bruyne scored the most goals for City, ending the campaign with 15 goals to his name.

Predictable Premier League?

With such remarkable success throughout the past decade, it came as no surprise that Manchester City were the clear favorites in a 2021 public survey on who would win the 2021/22 Premier League. Within the same survey, fans of the top five major EPL teams concluded similar results across the board, with close to half of respondents predicting the outcome of May 2022. It remains to be seen whether City will continue their excellent run of form and meet sky-high expectations in the 2022/23 season.
