Whilst PayPal topped a download ranking for the United States in 2025, Klarna led a pack of BNPL competitors. Until the end of Q2 2025, the number of downloads of the Klarna app was about half of that of the PayPal app - a significant change compared to earlier years, when PayPal was downloaded relatively more often. This confirms a conclusion from a different BNPL ranking in the U.S. based on users, namely that Klarna is more popular than some of its competitors.

Aug 6, 2025 | Mental Health & Substance Abuse

In 2023, around 60 million adults in the United States received treatment or counseling for their mental health within the past year. Such treatment included inpatient or outpatient treatment or counseling, or the use of prescription medication. Anxiety and depression are two common reasons for seeking mental health treatment.

Who most often receives mental health treatment?

In the United States, women are almost twice as likely than men to have received mental health treatment in the past year, with around 21 percent of adult women receiving some form of mental health treatment in the past year, as of 2021. Considering age, those between 18 and 44 years are more likely to receive counseling or therapy than older adults, however older adults are more likely to take medication to treat their mental health issues. Furthermore, mental health treatment in general is far more common among white adults in the U.S. than among other races or ethnicities. In 2020, around 24.4 percent of white adults received some form of mental health treatment in the past year compared to 15.3 percent of black adults and 12.6 percent of Hispanics.

Reasons for not receiving mental health treatment

Although stigma surrounding mental health treatment has declined over the last few decades and access to such services has greatly improved, many people in the United States who want or need treatment for mental health issues still do not get it. For example, it is estimated that almost half of women with some form of mental illness did not receive any treatment in the past year, as of 2022. Sadly, the most common reason for U.S. adults to not receive mental health treatment is that they thought they could handle the problem without treatment. Other common reasons for not receiving mental health treatment include not knowing where to go for services or could not afford the costs.

In 2024, the annual per capita gross domestic product (GDP) in different provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China varied from approximately 228,200 yuan in Beijing municipality to roughly 52,800 yuan in Gansu province. The average national per capita GDP crossed the threshold of 10,000 U.S. dollars in 2019 and reached around 95,700 yuan in 2024.

Regional economic differences in China

The level of economic development varies considerably in different parts of China. Four major geographic and economic regions can be discerned in the country: The economically advanced coastal regions in the east, less developed regions in Northeast and Central China, and the developing regions in the west. This division has deep historical roots reflecting the geography of each region and their political past and present. Furthermore, regional economic development closely correlates with regional urbanization rates, which closely resembles the borders of the four main economic regions.

Private income in different parts of China

Breaking the average income figures further down by province, municipality, or autonomous region reveals that the average disposable income in Shanghai or Beijing is on average more than three times higher than in Tibet or Gansu province. In rural areas, average disposable income is often only between one third and one half of that in urban areas of the same region. Accordingly, consumer expenditure per capita in urban areas reaches the highest levels in Shanghai, Beijing, and the coastal regions of China.

In the three months to July 2025, there were approximately 718,000 job vacancies in the UK, the fewest number of job vacancies since April 2021. The number of job vacancies in the United Kingdom reached a record high of 1.3 million in the three months to May 2022, with the number of vacancies steadily falling since then. During the provided time period, the number of job vacancies fell to its lowest levels in the months leading to June 2020, at just 328,000, at the height of COVID-19 restrictions.

Tight labor market beginning to loosen

After weathering the economic storm of COVID-19, the UK labor market has been reasonably healthy since 2021. The unemployment rate, which reached 5.1 percent in late 2020, declined in the following months, to a post-pandemic low of 3.5 percent by August 2022. Since that point, however, the unemployment rate has crept up, and was 4.4 percent in November 2024. Resignations have also started to decline, after reaching a peak of 442,000 in the second quarter of 2022, there were just 181,000 in the third quarter of 2024.

Which industries are experiencing staff shortages?

The percentage of businesses reporting a staff shortage in the UK reached 15.7 percent in September 2022, before falling to just 9.7 percent by October 2023, another indication of a loosening labor market. According to data from that month, approximately 1 in 4 UK businesses in the accommodation and food services had a shortage of staff, the highest of any sector, followed by human health and social work at 18.4 percent, and manufacturing at 17.6 percent. Many of the recent struggles of Britain's National Health Service are directly related to staff shortages, with the public seeing a shortage of doctors and nurses, and overworked staff as some of the main problems facing the NHS.

Electricity prices in Germany are forecast to amount to 68.58 euros per megawatt-hour in August 2025. Electricity prices in the country have not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels.

Electricity price recovery

German electricity prices began recovering back to pre-energy crisis levels in 2024, a period driven by a complex interplay of factors, including increased heating demand, reduced wind power generation, and water scarcity affecting hydropower production. Despite Germany's progress in renewable energy sources, with over 50 percent of gross electricity generated from renewable sources in 2023, the country still relies heavily on fossil fuels. Coal and natural gas accounted for approximately 40 percent of the energy mix, making Germany vulnerable to fluctuations in global fuel prices.

Impact on consumers and future outlook

The volatility in electricity prices has directly impacted German consumers. As of April 1, 2024, households with basic supplier contracts were paying around 46 cents per kilowatt-hour, making it the most expensive option compared to other providers or special contracts. The breakdown of household electricity prices in 2023 showed that supply and margin, along with energy procurement, constituted the largest controllable components, amounting to 40.6 and 11.6 euro cents per kilowatt-hour, respectively. While prices have decreased since the 2022 peak, they remain higher than pre-crisis levels, underscoring the ongoing challenges in Germany's energy sector as it continues its transition towards renewable sources.

Aug 6, 2025 | Mining, Metals & Minerals

As of August 2025, based on market capitalization, BHP Group was the largest mining company headquartered in Africa. As of that period, this company's market capitalization was nearly 130.8 billion U.S. dollars. Glencore PLC ranked second, with a market cap of 47.65 billion U.S. dollars.

South Africa's mining industry

South African mining companies dominate the African mining industry. In fact, the country has one of the largest mining markets on the continent. South Africa is rich in mineral resources, especially precious metals such as platinum and gold. In 2022, the country was the leading producer of platinum worldwide, with an output of 140 metric tons. At the same time, South Africa accounted for around 23 percent of the global export trade of platinum in the same year.

Trends in Africa’s mineral sector

Due to the vastness of its mineral resources, Africa plays a key role in the global mining industry. The continent holds significant shares of minerals compared to other world regions. For instance, Africa produced around 84 percent of the world’s platinum output in 2021 and 45 percent of the global diamond gem production in 2020. However, despite the large mineral reserves, the continent faces the challenge of increasing its mining production, which also requires greater infrastructural investment.
