Definition Validity
Validity is a criterion for the quality of a scientific analysis and its findings. An analysis is valid when it measures what it is supposed to measure, i.e. if the ascertained data truly answer the questions that are supposed to be analyzed. When measuring instruments repeatedly generate the same accurate but false result, the measuring instruments can be considered reliable but not valid.
For other important criteria for the quality of scientific analysis, see reliability and objectivity.
