As of 2023, Sub-Saharan Africa had closed 68.2 percent of its gender gap. This means females were, on average, some 32 percent less likely to have the same opportunities as males in the region. From a country perspective, performances varied greatly. Namibia, South Africa, and Rwanda presented the best results, each with an index of roughly 0.8, which showed an average gender gap of approximately 20 percent. The achievement positioned Namibia among the nine best performers to close more than 80% of the overall gender gap in the world. On the other hand, Chad had the lowest performance in Sub-Saharan Africa, achieving a score of 0.57.
The Global Gender Gap Index measures gender-based gaps based on four dimension: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. The highest possible score is one, which signifies total equality between women and men.
