Seats in the National Assembly South Korea 2024, by party
As of June 13, 2024, South Korea's National Assembly had 300 members. The Democratic Party held 170 seats, followed by the People Power Party, which merged with the People Party in April 2022, with 108 seats. Members of the National Assembly are elected for a four-year term. Voters 18 years and older have to cast two ballots: one for a district representative and one for a political party, whose share of votes is distributed proportionally for national-level seats. The last election was held on April 10, 2024.
Political participation in South Korea
The number of political party members in South Korea has risen steadily in recent years, reaching over 10.6 million in 2022. Compared with other countries, this is a very high figure. However, if we look at the number of members who have paid their membership fees, this figure drops to one-tenth. According to a survey on participation in social organizations, only two percent of respondents stated that they were involved in political parties.
Public trust in politics
The level of satisfaction with politics among South Koreans is not very high. According to a 2023 survey, respondents rated their satisfaction with the political situation in South Korea at 4.4 out of 10 points. As for trust in the National Assembly, it was considered the least trustworthy institution in the country.
