Reasons for not purchasing pre-owned products online in the Netherlands 2020
Refurbished, pre-owned, and open-box products were not a popular online purchase in the Netherlands in 2020. Over two thirds of consumers in the Netherlands indicated in a survey they had never bought one of these so-called retourdeals (in English: return deals, a term coined by e-commerce market leader Bol.com in the Netherlands) or tweedekansproducten (in English: second chance products). These products are usually defined as returned items, which are resold at a discount, often by the original retailer. These are not necessarily, although sometimes, refurbished. The main reason Dutch consumers preferred not to buy these returned products is that they simply prefer new items. Nearly 30 percent cites a too small of price difference with the new product as their main reason not to buy them.
