Total federal funding authorized for public transportation in the U.S. 2016-2026
In 2021, the federal funding for public transit in the U.S. amounted to almost 57.5 billion U.S. dollars. This represented the highest annual funding from 2016 to 2021 under the FAST Act bill, passed by Congress in the Obama administration and included 44.5 billion U.S. dollars in COVID-19 relief funding. In November 2021, the new Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill was passed with a five-year total authorized budget for public transit of more than 108 billion U.S. dollars. Under this new law, the approved funding for U.S. public transportation reached 20.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2022.
