MTA: Annual ridership of the New York City Transit Authority, by division 2019-2022
In 2022, around 65.7 percent of the total ridership of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) network was transported by the New York City Subway. During 2022, the NYC underground network reported over one billion paid rides, a considerable year-over-year increase of around 33 percent.
The MTA is the corporation responsible for public transit in the New York City metropolitan area. It operates the largest subway system in the U.S., together with commuter rail lines, local and express buses, and a bus rapid transit system.
