Agriculture emissions in the U.S. & China 2020-2050

China's agriculture sector emitted almost one billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GTCO₂e) in 2021. This was almost double the emissions produced by the agriculture sector in the United States that year. Agriculture-related emissions in China are projected to decrease considerably over the coming decades under the World Data Lab “business-as-usual” scenario, and are expected to have fallen below U.S. levels by 2050.

* The numbers created under the “business-as-usual” scenario depict such a scenario without drastic deviations in technology advancement or policy-making from past episodes. While there is typically still some technological progress in the form of reducing emissions intensities (stemming e.g. from energy efficiency gains) that are partly a result of policy actions, this scenario does not take into account announced policy pledges or the like.
