Frankfurter Wurst
Refrigerated frankfurter sausages belong to the overall sausage category. In the United States, the terms, frankfurter sausage and hot dog may be used interchangeably. Frankfurter sausages are named after Frankfurt am Main in Germany, where the highly seasoned and boiled sausage first originated. The processed meat product is traditionally made from mixed pork or beef and has a distinctive brown or pinkish color. The sausage was culturally imported from Germany to the United States and soon enjoyed great popularity, especially at food stands at sports games or street food stands.
U.S. sausage market
In the United States, sausages are mainly consumed for breakfast or dinner or, as said earlier, may be enjoyed as an in-between snack at sports games. The year-round favorite is served hot and may come as a plain sausage or be served as a hot dog with a bun and various condiments including ketchup, mustard, pickles relish or sauerkraut – depending on the region. Companies shaping the retail sausage market in the United States are comprised of Hillshire Brands, Kraft Foods and the Bar-S Foods Corporation to name a few. The sausages are sold in cans or jars and may be refrigerated or not.
