In 2019, 50 percent of international visitors to Singapore went to Gardens by the Bay, a city park within the Marina Bay district with three waterfront gardens: Bay South, Bay East, and Bay Central. It is followed by the Integrated Resorts, which are the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) and Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). International visitor numbers to these attractions were expected to plummet in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2019 was the latest data available due to the halt in international tourism from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
Industry brought to a halt
Singapore recorded its very first case of COVID-19 by the end of January 2020. As the numbers started to spike by around April, a strict lockdown and other safety measures and policies were introduced and enforced by the government. Travel to Singapore has been restricted since, and the number of flights to Singapore dropped drastically. The reduction in flights then contributed to the decrease of monthly international visitor arrivals to Singapore , which is unfortunate for businesses that rely on tourist activities, further impacting the tourism industry and its contributions to the Singapore GDP.
Supporting the tourism sector through domestic demand to
In order to support businesses affected most by the pandemic such as hotels, attractions, and tours, the Singaporean government planned to give away 100 Singapore dollars worth of SingapoRediscovers vouchers per citizen. The SingapoRediscovers initiative is backed by 230 million Singapore dollars worth of credits that were set aside to support the tourism industry. However, the significantly small citizen population of Singapore would be hardly able to make up for the losses from international visitors, who, before the pandemic, numbered at around five times that of residents.
