Global R&D spending in the automotive sector reached 145 billion euros in 2022. Companies based in the European Union stood behind the largest share of the spending, amounting to more than 60 billion euros. Japanese companies spent the second largest sum on research & development that year. Breaking down by company, Volkswagen was the largest single spender.
