Poor people in Tanzania 2007-2018, by area of residence
Roughly 14 million people were poor in Tanzania as of 2018. Mostly, poor people lived in rural areas (11.3 million). Although the poverty rate has decreased in the same period, around one more million Tanzanians were considered poor in comparison to 2007, which is explained by rapid population growth in the country. According to the source, the individuals were defined as poor when their consumption was below the national poverty line, being therefore not able to meet their basic consumption needs. In 2018, the national basic needs poverty line was 49,320 Tanzanian shillings per adult per month.
