Change in number of tourist arrivals in Africa 2022, by region
Between January and May 2022, Africa experienced a 49.9 percent drop in international tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2019. The decrease reached around 48 percent for the North African region, while sub-Saharan Africa registered a dip of 50.7 percent. In 2020 and 2021, the regions experienced much higher drops from 2019. This was generally due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which had adverse effects on the travel and tourism sector.
