ExxonMobil's was the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter among the Big Oil companies worldwide in 2022. The U.S. oil and gas corporation reported combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions of 100 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) that year from operated assets. Shell ranked second, with GHG emissions of 58 MtCO₂e. By comparison, BP reported the lowest GHG emissions among the oil supermajors.

Scope 1 (direct) GHG emissions are those deriving from sources associated to a company’s assets. Scope 2 (indirect) GHG emissions relate to electricity generation, steam, and heat purchased from third parties for internal consumption.
