Number of inbound wellness trips in Hungary 2017-2023
Hungary is home to numerous spas and bathing facilities that attract thousands of international visitors each year. From 2017 to 2023, the number of inbound wellness trips made to Hungary peaked in 2019 at 502 thousand. However, due to the consequences of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, this figure decreased to 138 thousand by 2021. In the same year, the expenditure of foreign tourists visiting Hungary for wellness purposes totaled 1.9 billion forints, representing a considerable decrease compared to the peak year of 2018, when it reached 8.3 billion forints.
Most popular settlements with thermal spas
It comes as no surprise that of all settlements with thermal spas, Hungary’s capital, Budapest recorded the highest number of guest nights in 2021. During the same year, Hajdúszoboszló – a town in eastern Hungary famous for its thermal spa complex – recorded 522 thousand guest nights, the majority spent there by domestic tourists. Foreign visitors seemingly preferred the bathing facilities of Héviz, as 183 inbound guest nights were recorded in the spa town over the same time.
Spas offering medical services
Besides infinite opportunities for bathing and relaxation, Hungarian spas also offer medical services covering a wide range of balneology programs. As of 2021, there were 106 medical baths in the country, representing an increase compared to the previous year. Moreover, a total of 121 baths offered medical treatment in Hungary during the same year.
