Projected heavy-duty truck CO₂ emissions worldwide in the net zero scenario 2010-2050
Global heavy-duty truck emissions reached almost two billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂) in 2022. Under the IEA's Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2050 scenario, emissions from heavy-duty trucks would fall to below 900 MtCO₂ by 2040. This pathway would require the accelerated deployment of electric and hydrogen-fueled trucks to displace internal combustion engine vehicles. As of 2022, heavy-duty vehicles accounted for roughly a quarter of global transportation CO₂ emissions.
