Production of paddy in Indonesia 2014-2023
As of 2023, paddy production in Indonesia was estimated to be around 53.63 million tons. Indonesia is one of the world's leading paddy rice producers, and rice is the staple food for most Indonesians.
Indonesia's rice production
There are millions of hectares of paddy fields in Indonesia, with East Java coming out on top as the leading paddy producer among other provinces in the country. Despite being one of the largest producers in the global rice market, Indonesia still needs to import a considerable amount of rice to meet domestic demand while exporting only a fraction of its production. The country’s lag in adopting advanced agricultural technologies and effective management tends to hinder its ability to keep up its rice production in line with high consumption and population growth.
Exploring alternative staple foods in Indonesia
In addition to rice, Indonesia has historically embraced other staples such as maize, cassava, sago, and bananas. Recently, the government has initiated efforts to encourage the consumption of these foods instead of solely relying on rice. Over the years, the production of bananas in Indonesia has steadily increased, while per capita consumption of corn is expected to rise in the coming years.
