Total cargo throughput in Singapore amounted to 578.22 million metric tons in 2022. This represents a slight decrease in the total volume of cargo unloaded and loaded at the port compared to the previous year. Over the measured period, the highest cargo throughput was reached in 2018, with over 630 million metric tons.
A central maritime cargo hub
Singapore has the second largest container port in the world in terms of cargo tonnage, behind Shanghai. In terms of international cargo load and unloaded, the country also ranks second behind Indonesia in ASEAN. This central role of the country on a global scale is facilitated by its strategic location on the Strait of Malacca, being the first container port built in the region. Since then, the port's throughput has only grown. As a result, the country has been able to develop economically as a leading maritime nation, achieving a key position in international trade. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the port's activity has remained resilient over the past two years, with a record container throughput of 37.48 million TEUs.
Bunkering services
Bunkering services have also continued to grow in recent years at Singapore Port, reaching 49.9 million metric tons sold in 2021. Conventional bunkers accounted for the majority of these sales, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering was launched in March 2021 and is expected to grow to diversify fuel offerings. This is part of the maritime decarbonization effort, in line with Singapore's strategy as a recognized petrochemical hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
