Most used in-store (POS) payment methods in Japan 2017-2023, with 2027 forecast
The share of cash in Japan's in-store payments declined further, but still held the highest market share come 2023. The source predicts that coins and paper money will remain a major payment method in Japanese physical stores, although it will eventually give way to mobile wallets. One notable wallet that is predicted to see more use is that of PayPay, an app responsible for nearly half of the QR code payments in the country. Alongside PayPay, the user count of both Line Pay and Rakuten Pay are forecast to increase by around 33 percent between 2020 and 2025.
