Number and status of commercial CCS facilities worldwide 2024, by region
North America accounted for the highest number of projects in the commercial carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities pipelines as of March 2024, with approximately 198. Of this total, 175 were in construction or development, while 23 were operational. By comparison, there were four operational CCS facilities in Europe. CCS technologies involve capturing CO2 emitted from the burning of fossil fuels or from other industrial processes and sequestering the CO2 in underground storage facilities.
