Audience of news apps UK 2023

According to the results of a nationally representative survey held in the United Kingdom in October 2023, Apple News had an audience of 13.5 million people aged 15 years and above that month. BBC News ranked second with 12.6 million users. With the exception of Sky News and The Guardian, all other news apps in the ranking had an audience of under two million, including Google News and Mail Online.

*Data is partly derived from a panel of 10,000 people aged 15 and over that is designed to be nationally representative. The participants have meters installed across 25,000 personal devices to passively measure website and app usage. Data is combined with data from participating websites which are tagged so all devices visiting the site can be identified and logged.
The publishing source created a custom list by taking the ranking of the most popular apps by audience size provided by the source conducting the survey, and selecting those that had what the publishing source defined as 'a reasonable journalistic offering, whether that content is original or aggregated from other sources'. Specialist news apps focusing on areas such as sports and finance were included when these apps have a news component. Apps presenting just sports scores or share prices without any news content were excluded. This data is combined with data from participating websites which are tagged so all devices visiting the site can be identified and logged
