Four proposed oil projects in the U.S. operating at full capacity over a 30-year lifespan could release 24 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases once the transported oil is burned. The resulting emissions from the Sea Port Oil Terminal (SPOT) project could be up to seven GtCO₂e. By comparison, the U.S. produced a total of 6.6 GtCO₂e in 2019. There are fears these "carbon bomb" projects in the Gulf of Mexico could jeopardize the country meeting its national and international climate goals if they go ahead.
