Number of contact crimes in South Africa Q4 2022-2023, by type
In the fourth quarter of 2023, contact crime in South Africa continues to increase with the exception of reports relating to sexual offenses, which recorded 13,205 cases. This is a slight decrease from 13,799 in the previous year. Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and common assault accounted for the majority of contact crime reports in both years. However, the most notable increases occurred in cases of common assault and common robbery with a rise of around seven and nine percent, respectively.
